Having grown up in the South Pacific in Fiji and Samoa, travel was always in my blood so I guess it’s no surprise I ended up working in travel. I graduated from university with a degree in Modern Languages and then spent several years leading activity holidays worldwide before co-founding Archipelago Choice in 1998.

The Azores has always been my first love ever since I guided walking holidays there back in 1996. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful – parts are very similar to the South Island of New Zealand – but it’s the people that really make it exceptional. They are so friendly and open, even our clients find they make friends after just a few days on an island. I feel very blessed that we are in a position to introduce our many guests to the Azores as well as being able to work with and benefit the many drivers, guesthouse owners, activity providers we consider our partners.

My husband, Ian, and I have 2 children so they also get to visit our archipelagos and it’s this experience that really helps me when I’m putting together family holidays. We’ve had some fantastic family adventures – canyoning in the Azores, hiking and taking pick-up trucks around Cape Verde and more recently a real adventure in our new destination, Sao Tome and Principe.

We live in beautiful Keswick in the North Lakes and outside of work and family, I love to go running and racing in the fells.

My favourite activity in São Tomé & Príncipe

Leave your car behind and swap it for a bike on one of our unique Cycling Holidays. You will discover the quieter east coast on two wheels while taking in the stunning sceneries. The Italian owner of Mucumbli is a keen cyclist and you can hire bikes from the lodge. He will also be happy to give you a few tips that only a local could.

Follow the tarmac road until it finishes at Santa Catarina and along the way visit Roca Monteforte, and its fine sandy beach, and sustainable Cocoa Cooperative.

My favourite accommodation in São Tomé & Príncipe

The beautiful Bom Bom Island Eco Lodge is owned by Mark Shuttleworth, the first South African to travel into space. Through his HBD foundation (Here Be Dragons) he helped turn part of this spectacular island into a Bioreserve and aims to promote sustainable and responsible travel to the islands through higher end tourism.

Bom Bom has 25 spacious, tastefully furnished chalets equipped with A/C, telephone, private bathroom, flat screen TV (satellite channels), fridge and free WIFI. Meals are taken on BomBom island, which is a short walk over the turquoise sea along a charming walkway. As well as eating in the restaurant, the friendly staff can also arrange a table on the marina pier or a romantic meal on your own private beach.

You’re free to use the snorkelling equipment, paddle boards and kayaks while you’re staying and a highlight is meeting Chaplin the African Grey parrot who patrols the hotel and loves to have his tummy tickled!
