Escape to Hotel Roca Sundy, a wonderful hidden gem near the small fishing village of Sundy on the Principe coast, where time has stood still, and comfort, tranquility and nature have come together in perfect harmony.
For decades the old plantation, which was once one of the largest cacoa plantations of Sao Tome and Principe, was in great disrepair, as the jungle slowly took over again. A sustainable tourism plan was developed to restore the place. Some of the villagers who were living in the old slave’s quarters were re-housed to nearby houses and the restoration work was carried out by local builders using mainly recycled materials.
The result is a beautifully restored hideaway, with only twelve rooms and you can stay in either the Colonial House or the Plantation House. The spacious rooms are furnished with traditional colonial-style furniture from the original house, and some have balconies overlooking the square or the jungle.
Nowadays you can sit on the veranda and enjoy delicious dinners prepared with organic produce from the Roca’s plantation garden and other locally sourced products. Of course, there will always be a dessert on the menu made with high-quality chocolate from the islands.
The plantation hotel is close to a fishing village. The square outside the hotel is used as a meeting place by the villagers and is the perfect place to mix and mingle with the locals.
There is plenty to see and do when staying at Roca Sundy. We can organise hiking, bird and turtle watching trips. As well as 4x4 tours and Biosphere trails
