Overview

Our Sao Tome jungle trekking holiday starts with a challenging 3 day hike through the Obu National Park with a local guide.

Your first night is spent at Omali Lodge, on the outskirts of Sao Tome City. From here, you’ll head to the town of Neves to start your traverse from the west to the east of the  island.  This three day trek is designed for those that are comfortable with full days of walking, on terrain that can be unpredictable, muddy, hilly, sweaty and wonderfully adventurous. The rewards are numerous because your route takes you right into the heart of the rainforests around the Obo National Park, one of Africa’s most important but lesser known protected areas. There is an incredible wealth of animal life here, including monkeys, bats, wild cats and multiple species of frog, not the mention the incredible birdlife, with 20 species that are endemic to the island.

You’ll walk to the foot of Pico do Sao Tome, the islands’ highest peak (2024m). Subject to the weather and your level of fitness, there is the option to climb the peak before descending on rough jungle trails to the east coast. After three tough days of walking, you get a well-deserved rest in the beautifully restored Roca Sao Joao.

The second part of your trip is more relaxed, though there are plenty of options for activities when you’re ready to get out of your hammock and put down the cocktail glass! You can take a local cookery glass, head to the ocean for some snorkelling, kayaking or sailing, perhaps even scuba diving.  You take your pick and we’ll arrange it all for you.

If you want to chat to someone who’s been, get in touch and ask for Ian or Max.

Activities

Our 'Sao Tome jungle trek' allows you walk from one side of the island to the other where you'll discover the wild interior of the island. The trek can be hard underfoot and you'll find it hot and humid in the forest. The best time to travel would be May to September when it's a little cooler and drier. The accommodation in each part of the island you stay in is local in style, not luxurious yet comfortable.

Location

This holiday to Sao Tome not only allows you to experience the island's dramatic coast, but also its more wild interior. There is much to see and you definitely need a sense of adventure!
